Akismet take 2

In LOLcat style Akismet says, “Ur commints, I haz dem and U can’t havez dem!” 

One has to wonder why this blog, which I started as a test blog several months after my main blog here, which is now set to private because I went self-hosted with it, is immune to the Akismet spam eating monster. The other blog, which I set to private was from the time I started it till I marked it private, stalked by the spam eating monster. The spam count would go up by 10 or 20 or 30 before I was allowed to review a token spam or two. On this blog, if my spam caught number goes up by 5, I have 5 to review. Why was my other blog afflicted – from the time I started it till I marked it private – and not this one?

Anytime the “spam ninjas” as Tellyworth refers to them, change Akismet to counter new spammer tactics, it is going to falsely catch some innocents. I don’t know if that can be helped. 

The last one, is a case where spam was not being caught and is most likely due to, as Tellyworth says, changes in spammer tactics, or some new spammer coming on line.

The fact that the “spam phantoms ninjas” are working on things gives me virtually no confidence that a solution is coming. The problems have been around since I started blogging back in March 2007 and the “spam phantoms ninjas” have yet to fix the issues. They are either not very accomplished ninjas (aka Chris Farley) or they are illusions manufactured by TPTB (the powers that be) to give false hope.

This is the main reason I switched my self-hosted blog to Defensio and have never been sorry I did. Currently it is running at 98.77% accuracy and climbing and there have been two upgrades since I installed it, and it has never, after one of those upgrades, started to catch legitimate commenters. The same thing cannot be said for Akismet. Each “upgrade” ended up with Akismet catching legitimate visitors who had commented many times on my blog.

Sadly those blogging at the ol’ dot com have only two choices: Akismet or the one alternative, which is Akismet.
